the significance of swans

‘A rare, refreshingly female-focused dystopian thriller, centred on an ordinary wife and mother surviving in a post-apocalyptic world.’

Just a few years into the future, the planet is thrown into turmoil when people start disappearing in their sleep. As more and more people are inexplicably ‘removed’, infrastructures grind to a halt and eventually the once-unextraordinary Aeronwy finds herself completely alone.

After trekking over a hundred miles to her family farm in west Wales, however, she comes to realise that her biggest challenge in this brave new world will not be finding food and fuel, but dealing with another survivor…

The Significance of Swans is out now and available from all good bookshops. You can also order copies directly from the publisher, Y Lolfa, by clicking here.

I raced through this. Protagonist Aeronwy is refreshingly real and relatable, and the writing is pared back, understated but suffused with tension. I was gripped by the story, which is both bleak and beautiful. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to welcome Rhiannon on the podcast before the end of the year!

Rhiannon Lewis’ ‘The Significance of Swans’ is a perfect novel to pick up when struggling with a reading slump.
A reader can get lost in its familiar setting, crafted with such flair and imagination it turns into something completely new: surprising and rewarding, as well as unsettling and propelling.
Unmissable this season.
